AWS microservices to publish election results with high availability and security controls.

The challenge

In March 2018, Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) issued a tender to acquire cloud services with the objective of guaranteeing the availability and reliability of electoral results during federal elections. INE required a resilient and scalable architecture for critical services related to results publication and information dissemination.

INE needed a solution that would allow them to publish results efficiently and securely through a broadcaster dashboard, which is used by authorized media outlets. Challenges included ensuring availability of publication services, offering flexibility and scalability, establishing high levels of security and attack protection, and guaranteeing the integrity of published information.

The solution

In collaboration with iNBest and AWS, a microservices-based architecture was designed specifically for each of the critical services required by INE. This architecture was based on AWS services, which allowed for exponential increases in availability and configuration of publication services.

Microservices architecture: Each critical service was designed as an independent microservice, allowing for greater flexibility and scalability in each one. This modular architecture facilitated the implementation of tests and simulations to ensure the quality and reliability of electoral results.

On-site AWS consultant: An on-site AWS consultant was established to provide specialized support and ensure proper use of the final architecture.

Maximum security levels: Advanced security measures were implemented to block attacks and guarantee information integrity. Unmatched perimeter security levels were established to protect results publication services.

Use of AWS Lambda services: The inclusion of AWS Lambda-based services enabled vital tasks to be executed within electoral processes, optimizing resource consumption and ensuring efficient performance.
