Microservices architecture based on AWS to ensure data availability

for the INE during the federal elections in Mexico

In March 2018, Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) launched a tender for cloud services to ensure the availability and reliability of election results during the federal elections. The INE required a robust and scalable architecture for several critical services related to results publication and information dissemination.

Challenges of the project

The INE needed a solution that would allow for efficient and secure publication of results through a disseminator dashboard, used by authorized media outlets. The challenges included ensuring the availability of publishing services, offering flexibility and scalability, establishing high levels of security and protection against attacks, and ensuring the integrity of the published information.

Solution implemented

In collaboration with iNBest and AWS, an architecture based on specific microservices was designed for each of the critical services required by the INE. This architecture was based on AWS services, which allowed for exponential increases in the availability and configuration of the publishing services.

Some key features of the solution include:

Microservices Architecture: Each critical service was designed as an independent microservice, allowing for greater flexibility and scalability. This modular architecture facilitated the implementation of tests and simulations to ensure the quality and reliability of the election results.

AWS On-Site Consultant: An AWS consultant was deployed on-site to provide specialized support and ensure proper use of the final architecture. This helped optimize service performance and ensure the security of the information being published.

Maximum security levels: Advanced security measures were implemented to block attacks and ensure data integrity. Unsurpassed levels of perimeter security were established to protect the results publication services.

Using AWS Lambda Services: The inclusion of AWS Lambda-based services enables the execution of vital tasks within electoral processes, optimizing resource consumption and ensuring efficient performance.

Results and Benefits

Thanks to the AWS-based microservices architecture, the INE was able to successfully conduct federal elections, with results presented on time and information delivered quickly, efficiently, and transparently to the public. Despite the millions of attacks received before and during the elections, the infrastructure did not go down, demonstrating the high availability of the implemented services.

The inclusion of services developed with AWS Lambda ensured the execution of vital tasks within the electoral processes while also optimizing the consumption of computing resources, generating significant savings.
